Choosing A Home Care Agency
Learn key questions to ask when choosing a home care agency.
The vast majority of American seniors want to remain in their home as they age. Unfortunately, many age-related problems make self-care difficult. In fact, an estimated 75 percent of seniors between the ages of 65 and 75 will need support in at least one daily living task. A quarter of those seniors will need support in multiple areas. Instead of selling the family home and moving to an assisted-living facility or nursing home, seniors may want to consider in-home care. When choosing a home care agency, there a few things to consider.
Questions For A Prospective Home Care Agency
First, how much and what type of care is required. Like most businesses, home care agencies come in many shapes and sizes. Some offer standardized care packages during business hours while others offer extensive a la carte options, including short-term, long-term, and even 24 hour home care. Some home care agencies are Monday to Friday operations, while others provide care 365 days a year.
In addition to verifying service times and care offerings, there are a number of questions that should be asked before signing on the dotted line.
Company Biography. Does the company have printed literature that clearly outlines who they are, how long they have provided services, a list of supports provided as well as limits to services, fee schedules, patient rights, and so forth? Companies that do not operate transparently should make you think twice.
Company Recognition. Is the company recognized and accepted by Medicare or the VA? Do they have state licensure? What does their Better Business Bureau profile look like? Have they won any awards for service?
Caregivers. Are the caregivers actual employees of the home care agency or are they, independent contractors. Are the caregivers, trained, supervised, bonded and insured? Who handles complaints if the caregivers do not provide adequate service?
Caregiver Access. Are caregivers regular or are random caregivers selected? If the caregiver cannot make it to a scheduled care appointment will the company provide a replacement?
Plan of Care. Do family members and the senior get to contribute to the plan of care? Is there an educational component to the care?
